Creating a vibrant workspace and state-of-the-art laboratory for Cytiva
We recently completed an exciting project for global biopharmaceutical company, Cytiva at Sycamore House, Stevenage Bioscience Campus. This refurbishment project required the expertise of our civil and structural engineering team, to help create a new ultra-modern laboratory and modern office space. The Glanville team provided the civil and structural engineering detailed design for the category B fit-out on this project.
Having previously worked on science and research projects for Achilles Therapeutics and Freeline Therapeutics at Sycamore House, we were delighted to work with the same team for this project for Cytiva for Kadans.
The client: Cytiva
Cytiva is a globally recognised technology and service provider in the biopharmaceutical industry. The company helps its clients develop, manufacture and deliver advanced therapeutic products, including life-saving treatments like vaccines, biological medications and gene therapies.
The team
Following the successful completion of two other projects at Sycamore House, the Glanville team were proud to work with the same team for this project.
- Contractor – 8 Build
- Architects – Fairhurst Design Group
- MEP Consultant – Scotch Partners
- Cost Consultant – CB3 Consulting
The project
The client required a specialist, state-of-the-art laboratory space to be fitted with very specific requirements. They also needed a modern and vibrant working environment. The lab required expert technical knowledge, and as with any science laboratory project, Civil and Structural Engineering was a vital element of the design. We worked in close collaboration with the architect and MEP consultant in this project to ensure designs were fully coordinated and to pre-empt any issues before they arose.
One of the main challenges of this complex project was the support of the proposed flues as they extended 15m above ground level without taking any support from the existing building. To overcome this challenge, the team designed a 508 mm diameter circular hollow section post that was cantilevered from a large, reinforced foundation.
“The design and fitting of a technical laboratory requires intricate planning and detail. Sycamore House is a busy and vibrant working environment, so tight collaboration was vital to ensure the project ran smoothly. The team worked hard to complete the project to the client’s exact specifications.” [Juanid Farooq, Director Structural Engineering.
