Glanville was appointed by Berkeley Homes (Southern) to develop and deliver a series of complex modifications to an existing roundabout on the heavily-trafficked A24, near Southwater in West Sussex. The junction improvements, which were completed recently, are required to mitigate the traffic impact of a large-scale housing development that is under construction in the nearby village.
These modifications saw the introduction of a left-turn segregated lane on one of the approaches, and also included the widening of other entries, new road markings, improved signage, new sections of vehicle restraint system and upgrades to the street lighting.
The design of the left-turn segregated lane posed a particular set of challenges due to limited land availability. Working closely with a geotechnical specialist, Glanville developed a solution involving the use of cutting-edge soil reinforcement technology that responded to the constraints and delivered both in terms of ease of construction and cost.
During the construction phase Glanville was responsible for site supervision through the appointment of a full-time Resident Engineer.
