Glanville’s structural engineers successfully delivered a state-of-the-art laboratory and office space for the biopharmaceutical company, Cytiva

Delivering a state-of-the-art laboratory and office space for Cytiva

We provided civil and structural engineering design for the globally recognised technology and service provider in the field of therapeutics Cytiva, at Sycamore House, Stevenage. Sycamore House is an innovation hub for life sciences, and cell and gene therapy. Following successful previous projects at Sycamore House, the same design team of Fairhurst Design Group (Architects), Scotch Partners (MEP Consultant), CB3 Consulting (Cost Consultant), 8 Build (Contractors) and Glanville Consultants, was asked to complete the design work for Cytiva with Kadans Science Partner as landlords.

The project brief involved creating a vibrant workplace and specialist, state-of-the-art laboratory space to meet the client’s exact specifications. This project required the management of intricate details and expert technical knowledge. As with any laboratory refurbishment project, Civil and Structural engineering forms a vital part of the design work. We worked closely with both Scotch Partners and Fairhurst Design Group to ensure full coordination and pre-empt any issues before they arose.

One of the challenges of this complex project was the support of the proposed flues. They extended 15m above ground level without taking any support from the existing building. To overcome this challenge, the team designed a 508 mm diameter circular hollow section post that was cantilevered from a large, reinforced foundation.
