Graduate Structural Engineer – Hertfordshire Office (Hemel Hempstead)

We are a multi-discipline consultancy providing engineering, design and surveying expertise to the construction industry, with the skills to offer professional advice through all stages of a project together with extensive experience across all sectors.

We have established offices in Oxfordshire, Hertfordshire, Bristol and Cambridge.

We have a permanent opportunity within our Structural Engineering team for a Graduate Engineer with experience in a structural engineering consultancy. This role is based in our Hemel Hempstead office.

Our team works on a variety of projects across multiple sectors, including commercial, R&D, energy, and residential, covering both new builds and refurbishments. We collaborate closely with our in-house teams, offering expertise in structural and civil engineering, traffic and transport engineering, building surveying, and geomatics.

Responsibilities

Structural Design & Analysis:

  • Carry out structural designs in steel, concrete, timber, and masonry.
  • Use industry software (e.g.,Tekla and TEDDS).

Project Collaboration & Delivery:

  • Work closely with architects, clients, subcontractors, and multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Assist in project planning, coordination, and reporting.
  • Attend meetings and liaise with stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery.

Technical Development & Innovation:

  • Take the initiative in problem-solving and providing design solutions.
  • Stay updated on industry standards, regulations, and sustainability considerations.
  • Work towards Chartership (IStructE/ICE) with our support.

Site Visits & Compliance:

  • Conduct site visits to assess projects and ensure adherence to design specifications.
  • Ensure projects comply with statutory requirements, including health and safety.

 

Key skills & experience

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (BEng/MEng or equivalent).
  • 2+ years’ experience in a structural consultancy (preferred).
  • Proficiency in structural design software and engineering principles.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
  • A proactive and self-motivated approach to learning and development.
  • Design experience in all common building materials.
  • An understanding of geotechnics and foundation design.
  • Ability to professionally represent the Company.
  • Competency in preparing structural designs across various materials

 

This team undertakes the following tasks

  • Site appraisal and feasibility assessments
  • Flood Risk Assessments and flood compensation assessments
  • Foul and surface water drainage design and hydraulic modelling
  • SuDS design
  • Drainage remedial works
  • Detailed design packages for Tender and Construction
  • Earthworks modelling
  • Flood Risk Activity Permits and Ordinary Watercourse Consent applications
  • CDM risk and mitigation assessment
  • Road Safety Auditing (Stages 1 to 4)
  • Servicing / delivery design and management
  • Highways design – local authority and private residential / commercial (S38 / 184 / 278)
  • Vehicle swept path assessment
  • Utility assessment and impact negotiation (C3 & C4 estimates)
