Work has recently been completed on a major upgrade to a busy junction in Gloucester, designed by Glanville on behalf of University of Gloucestershire.
The Cheltenham Road / Oxstalls Lane junction experienced congestion problems that would have been exacerbated by the University’s planned expansion of their nearby Oxstalls Campus to provide a new business school, additional student accommodation and sports facilities.
Glanville assessed the existing and proposed traffic conditions before developing proposals to solve congestion problems at the junction. A number of options were considered, including an improved priority junction, both a mini and normal roundabout, and traffic signals. Traffic signals were chosen as the preferred option as they offer greater capacity and provide better facilities for pedestrians and cyclists as well as offering the potential to incorporate bus priority measures – Cheltenham Road is a key bus route into the city centre. The junction improvements were completed recently, delivered via a Section 278 agreement between the University and Gloucestershire County Council.
Glanville also prepared a Transport Assessment, Travel Plan and Flood Risk Assessment to support the planning application.
